The Busy Twist remixes Zimbabwean band Gonora Sounds

“Journey Of Life” is the London-based DJ’s take on sungura, one of the country’s most popular dance genres.

“Journey Of Life Remix” is what The Busy Twist does best: uptempo, bass-heavy craze, influenced by regular trips to Africa, Latin America and the West-Indies, packed with undeniable British club music culture and production technique. The colourful video was shot on various locations in Harare, Zimbabwe, and was produced in collaboration with Colombian-French record label Galletas Calientes Records. It features appearances from dancer Beauty Katiji, Gonora Sounds band leader Daniel Gonora and musician Proud “Pippi” Gonora.

The original song “Rwendo Rweupenyu” (“the journey of life” in Shona, one of Zimbabwe’s most widely spoken languages) was performed by street band Daniel & Gonora Sounds, led by blind singer-guitarist Daniel Gonora and his prodigy drummer son Isaac, who has been playing with his dad since he was four years old. With its roots deeply embedded in Zimbabwe’s sungura music, the duo have spent nearly a decade and a half jamming on the streets of Harare, first starting out as the First Street Band. In a former life, Gonora was a member of one of the country’s most successful bands, the Jairosi Jiri Band. His collaboration with The Busy Twist is part of Nanko, a two-track EP released on vinyl.
