PAM Club: Hypnotic road trip with Stranger Souma

This week, PAM welcomes Stranger Souma, for a sonic road trip from Morocco to South Africa, passing by Egypt, between organic ambient and hypnotic techno.

Originally from Casablanca, Morocco, Stranger Souma began her musical journey by learning to play several instruments. Enthused by the possibilities of technology in music, she quickly became a respected DJ and producer, creating a deep, minimal yet spiritual sound in homage to the old soul of North Africa. DJ and producer, Stranger Souma is also the co-founder of Volubilian Records. Through this Moroccan-based label, she actively promotes the musical heritage of the region, while providing new opportunities for fellow female artists. She has trained several women in Djing, including Anïa, through the workshops she organizes. With this mix, Stranger Souma takes us on a sonic road trip through Africa: Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Zimbabwe… so many countries through which her mix travels. While presenting some releases from Volubilian, including an unreleased remix. Starting with organic ambient and downtempo tracks that explore Middle Eastern and North African sounds like Amazigh chants, Stranger Souma then takes us all the way to South Africa, with a crescendo of rhythm and hypnotic melodies. “When I prepare a mix,” says Stranger Souma, “the most important thing for me is the story that each track tells. It’s the feeling that comes over you when you close your eyes, to better see the sound and understand the universe of a song.
