With Ghanaian artists taking up more and more space on the international scene and Accra preparing to host the huge Afronation festival, we made a selection of Ghana’s best October music videos.
Shatta Wale – Borjor
To celebrate the release of his album “Wonderboy”, the African Dancehall King made it simple: his house, his pool and his friends. No need for great resources: the success of his new project proves once again that Shatta Wale has little to prove, after a year marked by his collaboration with Beyoncé.
Amaarae – Like it
Amaarae made her big comeback with this bewitching video. Directed by David Nicole Sey, known for his collaborations with Sarkodie, R2Bees or King Promise, the visuals stand out strongly from the rest of the releases in Ghana. We met Amaarae to discuss “Like it” and her journey.
Stonebwoy – Ololo (feat. Teni)
Accompanied by Nigeria’s number one entertainer, Stonebwoy did a real hit that resonates throughout Accra since its release. The video was shot at Kokrobite, the most reggae beach in the country; not surprising for this undisputed Ghanaian dancehall giant, who will be performing at Afronation.
M.anifest – Big Mad (feat. Simi)
In Big Mad, M.anifest explores his sentimental relationships in the story telling format that has always made him unique. Considered as one of the best lyricists of the abundant Ghanaian rap scene, he performed here alongside afropop singer Simi. Another featuring turned towards Nigeria after his collaborations with Burna Boy or Tony Allen.
Joey B – No waste time (feat. BOJ)
With his video shot in Ada Foah, where the ocean meets the Volta River, “No waste time” could not be anything else than this sunny and summery single. Joey B, who is becoming more and more prominent in Ghanaian rap, has teamed up with the excellent BOJ, a Nigerian rapper-singer who oscillates between the alté and afrobeats scene.
Shotkode – Heavy
Shotkode remains on his bases with “Heavy”: having made himself known with “Lizard”, a dance track, he delivers here a pure Afrobeats track that quickly gets into the head. The visuals were partly filmed in Jamestown, recently named one of the coolest neighbourhoods on the planet for its cultural richness.
Kofi Mole – Bestie
Taken from his EP “Aposor Love”, the track Bestie almost sounds like the American Young Thug. However, Kofi ‘Aposor Gangster’ Mole, proudly displays Ghana’s jersey in this neat video.
Kwame Dame – Dios Flow (God flow)
On a minimalist instrumental, the empawaa africa rapper Kwame Dame delivers here a striking freestyle, all in pidgin. Is he really the “God of the Gods” of Ghanaian rap as he claims in his title?
Ghetto Boy – Balance
The Afrobeats Prince returns with a very catchy track and a video marked by striking choreographies. Released shortly after his single “Je”, “Balance” will probably appear on his next project “Me vs You”, which he told us about in an interview earlier.
Kojey Radical – Cashmeare Tears
Ghana also shines through its diaspora, here in the person of Kojey Radical. This British rapper of Ghanaian origin recently delivered the Cashmeare Tears video clip, with all the elements that make him so special: offbeat style, humour and high professionalism.
