Four years after the album African Fast Food, Senegalese composer and bassist Alune Wade announces his return with “Saba’s Journey”, a first single from SULTAN, his fifth album due on May 6.
An artist on a perpetual cultural and sonic journey, Alune Wade continues his jazz epic. With “Saba’s Journey”, he gives rhythm to “the march of man” by marrying the groove of his bass with the haunting piano of Christian Sands. The result is a song that evokes both nostalgia and a quest. It’s a journey strewn with encounters of talented musicians: Mustapha Sahbi on oud, Cédric Duchemann on farfisa organ, Hugues Mayot on saxophone, Carlos Sarduy on trumpet, Cyril Atef on drums and Bobby Spark on synths.
This single is one of twelve tracks on the upcoming album, SULTAN. This Arabic name, both masculine and feminine, designates newborns and is also used in Turkish, Bengali, Avar and Urdu.
Composed and recorded in 2020 and 2021 between Tunis, Paris, New York and Senegal, the album, which gives pride of place to jazz and afrobeat, combines rhythms and sounds from Africa and the Middle East. The tracks take us from Djerba to Istanbul, from Dakar to Baghdad or from Kairouan to the kingdom of Saba, through Arabo-Andalusian or Berber rhythms with Western scales and Eastern maqâms.
