East of the River Nile, to be released on March 1st on Brownswood Recordings is a blend of soul, reggae, dub and fine jazz.
Since her 2011 debut, Until Tomorrow, also released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, Zara McFarlane has been considered a major talent on the British Jazz scene. Drawing from her Jamaican origins as well as from the deep spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders, she delivers four different reinterpretations of Augustus Pablo’s classic dub track.
Just like the first track available below, this new EP seems to be a convincing follow-up to her 2017 LP Arise. Her crystal-toned vocals guide the jazz drums and brasses, while Dennis Bovell dub effects space things out. This cover definitely adds to the original, while keeping its essence and roots.
East Of The River Nile will be out on March 1st on Brownswood Recordings. Pre-order it on Bandcamp.
