Shot in South Johannesburg, the video perfectly blends South African urban codes with American rap styles.
The track itself has the same mix of genres. While the choruses and some verses are rapped in English with an autotune straight out of the Atlanta trap, the kwaito and amapiano bass brings the listener back in South African territory. DJ Peppa presents two generations of rappers here, between the young guard and the accomplished artist. Chang Cello and Lucasrap, who has already collaborated with the producer on “Just Do It”, have not yet released any official projects, contrasting with Riky Rick, the biggest name on the track. Now undisputed star of South African rap, described as the most fashionable artist in the industry, the Durban-based rapper and entrepreneur has already released two projects, including Family Values, his first album that has met with great critical and commercial success.
This is a powerful start for Dr Peppa, who is officially producing his second title with “What it is”. The visual were shot by Dopnat, a Joburg based producer closed to Cassper Nyovest.
