Blaqbonez becomes Oxlade, Asake and Ayra Starr in new visuals for “Back In Uni”

Chocolate City talent Blaqbonez kindly mocks Naija’s hottest Afrobeats acts in the video for “Back In Uni”, a single from his upcoming album Young Preacher.

26-year-old Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez joined forces with one of Ghana’s highest rated producers Jae5 for “Back In Uni”, a catchy single, with sweet melodies and lyrics about breaking hearts, getting girls and the failure of his enemies. But the real interest lies in the accompanying music video, directed by Blaqbonez himself and Perliks. Unrelated to the lyrics, the visuals are a humorous tribute to music videos and pop culture references currently trending in Nigeria. Here’s a quick breakdown.

In recent months, it’s been nearly impossible to miss Oxlade’s COLORS performance of his massive hit “Ku Lo Sa”, and Blaqbonez gives us an accurate rendition of his viral moves. Pirate eye-patch and pink hair on, Blaqbonez also becomes Ruger in “Girlfriend”. Obviously, Mr.Money himself Asake did not escape: Blaqbonez is impressively convincing as the “Bandana” singer, sporting silver grillz and giving all the facial expressions to the camera. And when it comes to Afrobeats princess Ayra Starr, the rapper did not shy away: referencing a video snippet for her latest single “Rush”, Blaqbonez is hilarious in a platinum blond wig. Blaqbonez also hints at African Giant Burna Boy’s recent “high-waisted” Dazed cover, Wizkid’s black-and-white art for “Bad To Me”, and others including comedian Carter Efe and Internet sensation Portable.

The “Back In Uni” visuals are sure to create more anticipation around Blaqbonez’ forthcoming album Young Preacher. This 13-track project follows the successful Sex Over Love project, and a joint mixtape with Naija rappers A-Q and M.I. Abaga. The features have yet to be announced, but Young Preacher is set to be a “rap, reggaeton and trap” infused project, releasing October 21st.
