The British compilation series has partnered with the British/Jamaican rebel for this upcoming project, slated for September 24th.
Letts (aka The Rebel Dread) is a cultural polymath – pop star, filmmaker, radio broadcaster, commentator, Grammy winner, and DJ. Just like his predecessors (Nils Frahm, BADBADNOTGOOD and Metronomy), the British/Jamaican artist takes charge of a set of remixed songs that have influenced his musical culture. Named “Version Excursion”, the compilation offers a diverse mix of classic and modern, with legendary figures like John Holt, The Tamlins and Cornell Campbell alongside British veterans like Mad Professor and the irrepressible Dennis Bovell. The Late Night Tales’ release also features the (relatively) young striplings Kiko Bun, Khruangbin, Emily Capell and Prince Fatty who deliver the goods. Don’s exclusive remix is a deeply reggae-ed rendition of Big Audio Dynamite’s debut hit, “E = MC2,” which is produced by Gaudi.
Speaking about the compilation, Letts explained: “A disciple of sound system, raised on reggae n’ bass culture, my go to sound was dub. But that’s only half the story as the duality of my existence meant I was also checking what the Caucasian crew were up to, not to mention the explosion of black music coming in from the States. You’d think it impossible to draw a line between ‘em but not in my world.”
Version Excursion is scheduled for a September 24 release. You can pre-order it here.
