East Soul Perception gathers soul music between UK, Kenya and Uganda

Eight artists, five cities, three countries, one album.

Extra Soul Perception is a collaborative project exploring new tangents in soul music with eight innovative artists from the UK, Kenya and Uganda. The creative collaboration between Maxwell Owin, Lynda Dawn, Lex Amor, Labdi, K15, Hibotep, Faizal Mostrixx and Karun is sparked by Brittish Council & Arts Council England’s new programme, for a week-long writing camp in Nairobi. The result will be an audio-visual album, a documentary and series of events in East Africa and the UK.

All the artists will embark on a UK tour in February 2020, stopping off in London, Manchester and Liverpool. The project is inspired by the fusion experiments of American saxophonist Monk Higgins, on his 1968 album of the same name. It’s led by an open-minded approach of harmonising different sounds, techniques and traditions, to celebrate commonality across borders and change perceptions of a long-established genre.
