Pan African Rap: Bushali, Moonchild Sanelly & Kwako DMC

Also including new music from Dj LEWIS, Trillary Banks, Juno Kizigenza, NATTY and MANDO.

Each week Pan African Music scours the digital vaults for the latest and greatest rap from across the African continent and its diaspora. Drill, trap, grime, Afropop, amapiano, coupé-décalé, electro mahragan… all these sub-genres and interpretations make an appearance, attesting to hip-hop’s power to unite the world with indomitable flows and creative melodies. Rap is now the world’s music, and our pan-African selection is only scratching the surface. If it’s here, it means we think it bumps, and would be confident sharing it with hip-hop heads everywhere. We encourage you to do the same.

This week’s Pan African Rap roundup features a dance-off between skinnies and apoutchous incited by Dj LEWIS, a cute transgressive collaboration between Moochild Sanelly and Trillary Banks, a new kind of kinyatrap infused with dancefloor trap, Kumasi’s cheerful swag and a Kenyan drill classic.

Dj LEWIS
“SKINNY”

Côte d’Ivoire, May 14, 2022

A response to Dj Lewis’ recent single “APOUTCHOU” which roughly translates to “thick”, “SKINNY” is a wink at beauty in all its forms. Using an amapiano infused coupé-déecalé beat, DJ Lewis is kidnapped by a band of skinny girls, only to be reunited with the apoutchous in a dance-off.

Moonchild Sanelly
“Cute”

South Africa, May 17th, 2022

This one is for all my cuties in the world” says South African singer, songwriter and rapper Moonchild Sanelly. Moonchild’s aura is tough to match, but Leicester rap phenom Trillary Banks is right at home with Moonchild’s flirtatious, rule-breaking attitude.

Bushaki
“KURURA” feat. Juno Kizigenza

Rwanda, May 14th, 2022

The Kinyatrap star Bushali invites Rwandan Afro-pop singer Juno Kizigena onto his latest track that’s a step up from the gritty origins to a new dancefloor trap. The duo take over an abandoned Ethiopian jet plane dressed to the 9s for a new flavor of Kinyatrap.

Kwaku DMC
“Young and Wayward”

Ghana, May 11th, 2022

Kumasi native Kwaku DMC is young and wayward on this minimal drill track that relies heavily on Kwaku’s slick lyrics and cheerful swag. It’s an efficient and dense track that highlights Kwaku’s lyricism above all.

NATTY X MANDO
“BACK TO BACK”

Kenya, May 13th, 2022

Young Kenyan drillers NATTY and MANDO go “BACK TO BACK” and bar for bar on their new single. Picking up on all the codes; ski-masks, shaky visuals and a low poised flow, the duo is gunning for the top of Kenya’s drill scene
