Born in London to Jamaican immigrant parents, her career really began in Australia with the Grand Wazoo collective, an experience that led her to become the backing vocalist for legendary soul artists such as Wilson Pickett, Lee Fields and Marva Whitney, who has since become a close friend and mentor.

After a move to Europe, the singer was quickly spotted by the Madrid-based Tucxone Records as they were producing the great Sharon Jones, who also became a close friend of the singer. The label connected her with the six members of soul and funk band The Silverbacks, and after months of rehearsals, their debut album Black Rose was released in 2016, followed by Wishes & Wants in 2018.

“Stay Firm”, the band’s new video, is a soulful, funk anthem of resilience. Filmed one-on-one with Shirley Davis, the visual sees her performing the song in the middle of a lonely night. The new track heralds the band’s third album, Keep On Keepin’ On, whose title already heralds more songs of hope and resistance. The project will be released in spring 2022.

Listen to “Stay Firm” in our Songs of the Week playlist on Spotify and Deezer.

Joined by the band The Silverbacks, the soul singer unveils a new hymn to endurance and strength. Shirley Davis’ muses are probably Marva Whihney, Gladys Knight and Sharon Jones.
