Amongst these unsung phenomena is Afro-EDM, as it is popularly known. A handful of Nigerian talents are taking an early bet on local electronic music to complement Afrobeats\u2019 effort in projecting Nigerian music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s electronic community is helmed by the likes of D3an, CALIX, Sigag Lauren, Maze x Mxtreme who, over the years, have taken the reins to acquaint the sound with a wider audience. Afro-EDM leans into the immersion of Nigerian culture and foreign electronic music. \u201c<em>The main influence behind the melodies in \u2018Jaiye Omo\u2019 is Fuji-inspired; specifically Barrister Sikiru Ayinde<\/em>,\u201d Martinses says of the record which also embodies vivid EDM elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conception of Nocturne Music is also a notable step in Nigeria\u2019s EDM scene. Nocturne is a community of Nigerian EDM artists and also an avenue through which they can distribute their music. In October 2020, Nocturne released <em>Sounds of Nocturne Vol 1<\/em>, its first compilation of electronic songs by a lineup of Nigerian artists. Aunty Jerry, Idris Lawal) &#8211; &#8220;Jaiye Omo&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>July 9th, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJaiye Omo\u201d is the Yoruba interpretation of \u201cliving one\u2019s best life\u201d. The record embodies the core of Afro-EDM which is characterized by the infusion of local lyricism and basic electronic instrumental. According to Martinses, \u201c<em>the song is about enjoying your life including your vices and letting the darkness in<\/em>,\u201d which wouldn\u2019t be a bad idea when the darkness sounds as inviting as Aunty Jerry, Lady Donli and Idris Lawal. According to them, \u201c<em>the record has a base that could be used to express some intense emotion and we wanted to squeeze out as much of that emotion as we could<\/em>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"I&#039;m So Screwed\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U1-R8UWnOk4?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apartment VII &amp; Rhoseus &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m So Screwed&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>October 8th, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apartment VII and Rhoseus bond over a tale of doom as the singer recounts the throes of exploring an uncharted territory. \u201cI\u2019m so Screwed\u201d is the opening number off <em>Sounds of Nocturne Vol 1<\/em>, a compilation of electronic songs by Nigerian artists. The record shines with lyrical innuendo about the reality of Nigeria\u2019s EDM community as the singer ruminates on \u201c<em>killing myself on something that might never pay off<\/em>\u201d while \u201c<em>everybody\u2019s got a fucking job<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Lagos\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r8LRfl5KivQ?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jamie Black &#8211; &#8220;Lagos&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>October 8th, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamie Black serves an interesting view of one of Africa\u2019s most populous cities with this tribute. \u201cLagos\u201d, also off the Nigerian EDM compilation <em>Sounds of Nocturne Vol<\/em>, passes as a guide for the oblivious looking to acquaint themselves with happenings of the metropolitan. Black narrates the controversial yet true Lagos story from lyrics like \u201c<em>my people hustle lataro di ewuro<\/em>\u201d, hinting on Lagosians\u2019 enterprise from dusk to dawn &#8211; to \u201c<em>they party all night long<\/em>\u201d hinting on their brash hedonism nonetheless. According to the singer, \u201c<em>despite the adversity we experience as a country, Lagos is still a place to be and there are those living it up with the different culture, people, activities and how it comes alive at night. The song\u2019s&nbsp; instrumental shuffles between contrasting emotions as it progresses from Telesy yearning for a lover\u2019s company to the bouncy hook where he quizzes \u201c<em>will you stay by my side?\u201d<\/em>. \u201cBy My Side\u201d pictures an event of suspected unrequited love and how the singer seeks closure with a question on whether his lover would willingly retaliate his romantic gestures towards them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Love X (feat. Zaxo) &#8211; Love X<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>July 8th, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening with \u201c<em>a silver lining is all in the timing<\/em>\u201d over a mellow instrumental, Zaxo, with assist from DyselX, addresses the highs and lows of loving. He wheeled between unrequitedness, hurt, healing and assurance that \u201c<em>it gets better<\/em>\u201d. \u201c<em>I came across a vocal sample by Zaxo, and when I heard the lyrics, I was in love with it. It felt like a broken-hearted person was expressing their anger in lyrical form<\/em>,\u201d says DysleX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Body on Body\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-ujQXHZwi7M?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beyo JR &amp; Calix (feat. Maka) &#8211; &#8220;<strong>Body on Body&#8221; <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>June 23rd, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record interpolates \u201cBe My Man\u201d by Asa and it sees the singer relieve an experience with a flame who\u2019d given her \u201c<em>a night to remember<\/em>\u201d before going ahead to lead her on. Maka is accepting of the situation and in the same breath, open about moving on however, as she belts in pidgin English \u201c<em>no be only you sabi do iyanga<\/em>\u201d which could also mean \u201c<em>you don\u2019t have the monopoly of being haughty.
