A true rising star, 2020 saw her unveil a series of singles that have accumulated over five million streams: “Sweating,” “Jagna,” “Spirit_X” … She has also collaborated with Little Simz, the new star of the British rap scene. As for her influences, she cites West London dance music culture, Indian ragas on ten-note sitars, mantras chanted by gurus like Sadhguru, and the Ethiopian and Arabic religious music of her parents. As such, Alewya’s sound is the result of a fluid and spontaneous musical education, one that skipped between cultures and across borders.

“Play” is the fourth single from her forthcoming EP, Panther In Mode. The track features danceable, heady club sounds mixed with the singer’s R&B and soul style. The video accurately captures the mood of the track: caught somewhere between a ritual and a rave party, we see the artist singing and dancing, converting individuals to her musical airwave. The evocative lyrics are focused on bridging the gap between sensuality and female power.

Listen to “Play” in our Songs of the Week playlist on Spotify and Deezer.

Panther In Mode by Alewya, out on November 18 via Because London Records.

The London-based singer has announced her upcoming project, Panther In Mode, via this bewitching track.
