The Jazz Messengers were among the first modern jazz groups to tour the country and Japanese audiences were able to experience one of their all-time great line-ups, featuring the legendary drummer alongside Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert featured soaring performances of well-known jazz standards including Charlie Parker\u2019s \u201cNow\u2019s the Time,\u201d Thelonious Monk\u2019s \u201c\u2019Round About Midnight,\u201d and Jazz Messenger hits including \u201cBlues March,\u201d \u201cDat Dere,\u201d and \u201cMoanin\u2019,\u201d available below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>The performances were captured at the end of a tour that resulted after Blakey was crowned in a Japanese magazine poll as the American musician that the country\u2019s jazz fans were most eager to experience in person<\/em>,\u201d writes jazz critic Bob Blumenthal in the liner notes. \u201c<em>Over the first two weeks of January 1961 the Messengers performed in several major Japanese cities and were received as artistic heroes wherever they appeared<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin&#039; (Live at Hibiya Public Hall, Tokyo, Japan 1\/14\/61)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CidPZqDqSE4?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers &#8211; Moanin&#8217; (Live at Hibiya Public Hall, Tokyo, Japan 1\/14\/61)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>First Flight to Tokyo<\/em> will be released on November 5 in deluxe 2-LP vinyl and 2-CD editions, both of which come with elaborate booklets featuring rare photos by Japanese photographers Shunji Okura and Hozumi Nakadaira; an historical essay by acclaimed jazz critic Bob Blumenthal; plus new interviews with <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/blue-note\/\">Blue Note<\/a> president Don Was, celebrated saxophonist Lou Donaldson, Japanese jazz star Sadao Watanabe, renowned Japanese music critic Reiko Yukawa, Blakey\u2019s son Takashi Blakey, and a trio of drumming greats: Louis Hayes, Billy Hart and Cindy Blackman Santana.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bluenote.com\/art-blakey-the-jazz-messengers-first-flight-to-tokyo-the-lost-1961-recordings\/\" target=\"_blank\">First Flight to Tokyo : The Lost 1961 Recordings<\/a><\/em> by Art Blakey &amp; The Jazz Messengers, out on November 5 via Blue Note Records.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/art-blakey-the-jazz-messengers-first-flight-to-tokyo-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87824\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The legendary jazz label is releasing First Flight to Tokyo for the first time, a live recording of the legendary group drummer captured at Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo on January 14, 1961.
