His sampling and looping skills have been front and center on several albums and mixtapes, placing the Chicago artist in the lineage of revered beatmakers such as J Dilla and Madlib, two big fans of the Blue Note label. Twenty years after Madlib did the same, McCraven is invited to revisit this famous catalogue on his next album, <em>Deciphering The Message<\/em>. For this ambitious project, McCraven goes back to classics by <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/art-blakey\/?_per_page=17\">Art Blakey<\/a>, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Burrell and Eddie Gale, covering tracks that span several years in the label&#8217;s history. \u201c<em>When I put the sequences together, I wanted to create a narrative that would allow the listeners to immerse themselves and get into the movement<\/em>,\u201d he explains. \u201c<em>I really tried to make an album out of this material, not a compilation of tracks<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Makaya McCraven - Frank&#039;s Tune (AKA \u201cDe\u2019Jeff\u2019s Tune&quot;)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5keg6W7JMUo?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Makaya McCraven &#8211; Frank&#8217;s Tune (AKA \u201cDe\u2019Jeff\u2019s Tune&#8221;)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>Deciphering The Message<\/em> connects the past and the present and shows how jazz legends are born, by playing alongside like-minded, talented musicians. This is perfectly illustrated by the first single, inspired by pianist Jack Wilson&#8217;s hard-bop track \u201cFrank&#8217;s Tune,\u201d and renamed \u201cDe&#8217;Jeff&#8217;s Tune,\u201d with 80&#8217;s R&amp;B arrangements, floating guitar chords by Jeff Parker and De&#8217;Sean Jones&#8217; delicate flute.
