{"id":81609,"date":"2021-06-07T12:39:07","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T10:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/?p=81609"},"modified":"2021-06-08T09:12:56","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T07:12:56","slug":"pote-tenuous-tale-of-her","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/pote-tenuous-tale-of-her\/","title":{"rendered":"Pot\u00e9 releases second LP A Tenuous Tale of Her"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">St Lucian born, London grown and Paris-based producer and songwriter Pot\u00e9 has followed up his 2018 debut <em>Spiral my love <\/em>with a new extended player <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her. <\/em>The aim, says the beatmaker-lyricist, was \u201c<em>to write something that can live on stage without you present.<\/em>\u201d Sonically the eleven songs that complete <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her <\/em>released on the 4th June are in step with the borderless creative salon that is Noirwave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding his sound via DIY releases for Scratch Perverts imprint Black Gold, Pot\u00e9\u2019s&nbsp; noughties era productions were club-focussed odes to the dancefloor with shades of emotion at the edges. \u201c<em>I was entering a rediscovery of my culture, and my background,<\/em>\u201d he says, explaining, \u201c<em>I wanted to draw on that percussion of the Caribbean, and try to unite that with the reason I started writing music: as a valve for my emotions.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovering Buraka Som Sistema and connecting with Branko (one fifth of the recently reformed Lisbon based collective) he signed to the Lisbon based label <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Enchufada (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/enchufada-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Enchufada<\/a> in 2015 and the Afropean sounds of kuduro and zouk bass became part of Pot\u00e9\u2019s palette. Then in 2019 he hopped on board Damon Albarn\u2019s pan-African Africa Express for the intensive songwriting residency that became <em>Egoli<\/em> &#8211; the collective and label\u2019s last album on which he joined forces with fellow Londoner, Ghetts, on the track \u201cTwirl\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albarn returns the favour on <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her<\/em> which begins with \u201cUnder\u201d a jittery two-step of syncopated handclaps and synths which provide a backdrop to Pot\u00e9\u2019s vocal. Like Albarn who takes the lead on \u201cYoung Lies\u201d there is something vulnerable about Pot\u00e9\u2019s delivery with its delicious weariness. But <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her <\/em>traverses more emotions than just ennui.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Pot\u00e9 - &#039;Good2u (feat. INFAMOUSIZAK)&#039; (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7dlK6mC2GJk?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption> Pot\u00e9 &#8211; Good2u (feat. INFAMOUSIZAK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunshine filled steel pans play on \u201cGood2U\u201d featuring South London\u2019s INFAMOUSIZAK, a fellow all round producer and rapper with an indie sensibility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pot\u00e9\u2019s 2019 move to Paris where he worked on much of the album resulted in a sense of freedom evident in his aesthetic (see his recent <em>Colours<\/em> show) and the emotional honesty of <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>It really shakes your reality up<\/em>\u201d Pot\u00e9 says of relocating, something this young artist who draws on diasporic dance music subcultures to create something of his own, has already done more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True to the manifesto of Noirwave, a movement created by another son of the diaspora Petite Noir that simply instructs \u201c<em>to conform only to non-conformity<\/em>\u201d, Pot\u00e9 is unafraid to take musical risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus 3 cuts in on <em>A tenuous Tale of Her <\/em>on \u201cLows\u201d the loops begin to overlap and clash building pixelated polyrhythms.&nbsp;There\u2019s plenty of juxtaposition elsewhere on <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her<\/em> too, from the abrasive industrial sound of \u201cValley\u201d, to the ethereal \u201cPlastic Prayers\u201d with its sustained organ and echoing 808 snares.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, like many a great story, <em>A Tenuous Tale of Her <\/em>leaves you wanting to live in its world a little longer and rewards with each listen.
