It was while studying at Babcock University that the 22-year-old singer-songwriter decided to embark on a music career and he enjoyed early success in Nigeria. Bryann wrote poetry during his teenage years and formed a bond with Brandy’s RnB sound. He has also cited Wande Coal, Vybz Kartel and Angélique Kidjo as inspirations. “Longé” is the first single off ILÉKÉ, an EP that features Blaqbonez and Grammy-nominated producer Kel-P. Was music always the natural path for you?

I started singing in 2017 and before that I’ve always been in music. How would you describe yourart?

Success is relative. Right now I set goals for myself. My short term goal is to get my brand out there. The type of music I create is concoction music because it’s a mixture of so many things. I am inspired by juju, highlife, dancehall and afrobeats. Especially world music, R&B and soul.

Could you shed some light on the messages conveyed through your EP ILÉKÉ?

ILÉKÉ is the Yoruba term for “waist bead” and making this tape I wanted an object to signify my infatuation. When I made this I had a fling going on and I thought it was going to be long term. I got inspired by that time in my life. The EP is very sensual. I talk about love and going out and catching a vibe.

You created the term “Longé,” which is the single’s title. We also see the word written on bottles in the music video. What does it mean for you?

Longé means “catch a vibe.” I made the word up, you won’t find it in a dictionary. It’s not a part of any language. The song is meant to make you dance, it’s an infectious record. The song starts off with me focusing on my lady and as the song progresses I get multiple people to catch the vibe. I like to move with the flow when I’m creating. I like letting the instrumental guide me.

Listen to Bryann in our One Dance playlist on Spotify and Deezer.

On February 26, the Festac-born artist released his first single, “Longé,” a term he coined to encompass the frenetic dance his rhythms induced on the ILÉKÉ EP.
