{"id":72711,"date":"2021-02-19T17:40:12","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T16:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/?p=72711"},"modified":"2021-11-05T13:01:30","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T11:01:30","slug":"impulse-records-60th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/impulse-records-60th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Impulse Records releases surprise 60th anniversary box set"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For its 60th anniversary, the legendary Impulse! label invites listeners to rediscover jazz icons with its <em>Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment Box Set<\/em>. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1961, Impulse! quickly became one of history\u2019s most important jazz labels. It was created in New York by Creed Taylor, with the aim of illustrating \u201c<em>the new wave of jazz<\/em>,\u201d in the words of Bob Thiele and Rudy Van Gelder, who both led the label for many years. More specifically, its mission was: \u201c<em>To bring jazz into the era of Black Power, Afrocentricity and spiritual expansion<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Bismillahi &#039;Rrahman&#039; Rrahim - Marion Brown\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yjNqksj0mkk?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, John Coltrane is one of the big names in the box set. The saxophonist was one of the first artists produced by this label and he stayed with them until his death. \u201cThe house that Trane built\u201d has become a nickname for the label, with Alice Coltrane is also part of the list (her track \u201cBlue Nile\u201d is present on the compilation). We also find classics, such as \u201cWe Shall Overcome,\u201d played by the deceased Charlie Haden, a renowned conductor and double-bassist as well as Marion Brown&#8217;s composition \u201cBismillahi &#8216;Rrahmani &#8216;Rrahim,\u201d which references a statement of faith in Islam.
