Following the last episode of\u00a0“Comme un roman” radio show on\u00a0RFI (listen to it\u00a0HERE<\/a>), Vlad,\u00a0our journalist\u00a0focuses on\u00a0the song: “Autorail”<\/em>, Orchestra Boabab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This song by\u00a0Orchestra Baobab<\/strong>, main orchestra from Dakar in the 70’s, pays tribute to Senegalese railways. At that time, the train from Senegal to Mali was an adventure. At the beginning its was an mean for colonization, and the it became a symbol of independance.<\/p>\n

\"AfficherIn 1947-48, railway workers of Western French Africa were on\u00a0strike. Most resistent were on the line\u00a0Dakar-Niger, that links the Senegalese Capital to Bamako and ends at\u00a0Koulikouro, the harbour where used to arrive food product and travellers from\u00a0Mopti, Tombouctou, Gao\u2026 This main strike, told by\u00a0the writer\u00a0Ousmane Semb\u00e8ne in his book\u00a0\u00ab Les bouts de bois de Dieu<\/em> \u00bb lasted 5 months and a half, and made colonial authorities\u00a0go back on income\u00a0inequalities between senegalese, malian and french workers.
\nThis victory contributed to independance.\u00a0After 1960, railways kept on being an economic leg of both countries, and was a sign of pride as this song reminds it?<\/p>\n

On of these train used to stop by Thi\u00e8s, main subject of this song. In\u00a0Bamako, this golden age was embodied by\u00a0the\u00a0Rail Band<\/strong>\u00a0from the “Buffet-Hotel de la Gare”, where\u00a0Salif Keita<\/strong>\u00a0started and where\u00a0Mory Kant\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Djelimady Tounkara <\/strong>played.
\nToday, the highline Dakar-Bamako is in bad shape. Privatised in 2003, a new agreement has been signed end of 2015, with\u00a0China to renew the line. The train mai find again its golden age and inspire new songs…<\/p>\n
