{"id":42935,"date":"2016-08-10T10:15:32","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T09:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/pat-thomas-1st-career-retrospective-for-ghanaian-highlife-legend-strut-records\/"},"modified":"2021-02-11T12:05:22","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T11:05:22","slug":"pat-thomas-1st-career-retrospective-for-ghanaian-highlife-legend-strut-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/pat-thomas-1st-career-retrospective-for-ghanaian-highlife-legend-strut-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Pat Thomas :  1st career retrospective for Ghanaian Highlife Legend (Strut Records)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Strut Records<\/strong>, crate-digging record label based in London, pays tribute to the full-career of Ghanaian Highlife master\u00a0Pat Thomas, covering his late \u201860s big band highlife recordings through to the \u201cburger highlife\u201d movement of the early \u201880s.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to\u00a0&#8220;Go Modern&#8221;, 1st extract from this compilation (Out\u00a0on sept.\u00a030th) :<br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/276337885&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Golden Voice Of Africa\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0is currently on tour with his \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/strut.greedbag.com\/buy\/pat-thomas-and-kwashibu-area-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kwashibu Area Band<\/a>, and this compilation is a chance to get to know Thomas\u2019 singular career.<br \/>\nInitiated by\u00a0his uncle, <strong>King Onyina<\/strong>, major\u00a0highlife musician, <strong>\u00a0Pat Thomas <\/strong>\u00a0decided to become musician, listening to\u00a0<strong>Joss Aikins<\/strong>\u00a0(member of\u00a0<strong>Broadway Dance Band<\/strong>\u00a0signed on\u00a0<strong>Decca<\/strong>\u00a0record label based in Ghana).<\/p>\n<p>In 1967,<strong>\u00a0Ebo Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0invites Thomas to join the\u00a0Broadway Dance Band, a turning point in Ghanaian music history in the 70&#8217;s and a fresh air for\u00a0highlife music.<\/p>\n<p>In 1974 they formed together\u00a0<strong>Sweet Beans<\/strong>, supported by the\u00a0Cocoa Marketing Board.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab Reggae was hype, Jimmy Cliff was the guy to follow\u00a0\u2013 so I tried to include some reggae\u00a0and a touch of\u00a0soul in my music. \u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u00a0Sweet Beans band was renammed\u00a0<strong><em>Marijata<\/em><\/strong>. <em>\u00ab At this time, I asked <strong>George Prah<\/strong> (from\u00a0Gapophone label) to pay me and he said I had to write a song first. \u00bb<\/em> &#8211; that&#8217;s how the song\u00a0<strong>&#8216;Coming Home&#8217;<\/strong> was born, written in the label record office!<\/p>\n<p>After the AFRC<b>\u00a0<\/b>came to power in\u00a01979, Thomas left Ghana for\u00a0Berlin where he kept his\u00a0highlife musical roots while he\u00a0opened his mind. He became the first Ghanaian artist to record in Germany !<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00ab In\u00a0Ghana, expatriates living in Germany were nicknamed &#8216;hamburgers&#8217;, that is why the scene was called\u00a0<strong>&#8216;burger highlife&#8217;.<\/strong><em> \u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1355 aligncenter\"
