Ibibio Sound Machine releases Uyai <\/em>on Merge Records.<\/h3>\n

Here is the Ibibio Sound Machine<\/strong>‘s explosive cocktail : some funk and highlife from the golden era of West African, some disco, some modern post-punk and a big dollop of electronic music. All lead by the frontwoman London-born Nigerian singer Eno Williams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The album title Uyai<\/i> means \u201cbeauty\u201d in Ibibio language. It is the language of the Ibibio, a people from southeast Nigeria, but also from Ghana, Cameroun and Equatorial Guinea. \u201cIt is a continuation of Ibibio Sound Machine\u2019s story in which the worlds of West African highlife and electronic London collide via the storytelling lyrical thread of frontwoman Eno Williams\u2019 vocals in the Ibibio language of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ibibio Sound Machine explains  \u201cthere is darker, edgier quality to the sound that maybe reflects the difficult journey the band took from making the first album to completing the second one. The songs are based more around themes of empowerment, freedom, and the liberation of dance for women, and people in general.\u201d<\/p>\n
