After a remarkable release from one of the greatest Malian singer, Awesome Tapes From Africa comes back with a reissue of a South African pop EP\u00a0from 1988.<\/h3>\n

In South Africa, Umoja were the main stars of what we called Bubblegum music, a kind of kitschy pop music based on heady synth melodies.\u00a0Led\u00a0by \u201cOm\u201d Alec Khaoli, the band used this dance music as an escape within a country under the apartheid.<\/p>\n

Umoja translates as \u201coneness\u201d or \u201cunity\u201d in Swahili. The leader explains : \u201cIf you had grown up in South Africa at the time, there was nothing more in your life than oppression. It was even in your dreams. Anything that was a way out was welcome\u2026 When this music was playing everyone just wanted to dance, just have a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n

707 <\/em>was\u00a0Umoja’s major piece – South African platinum disc in 1988 \u00a0– will reissue the 5th of may 2017 via Awesome Tapes From Africa.<\/p>\n
