Here is our timeline for African hits of 2017: a 60-track journey to discover the artists who nailed it on YouTube in the last 12 months\u2026 but not only!<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today in Europe, YouTube view stats are the new index for measuring the success of a track. But in Africa, where only 23.4% of the population have access to internet (against 84% of the Europeans, according to Internet Live Stats survey), this data isn&#8217;t enough. And not always available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is however a great piece of information that helps reveal the main trends that have appeared in the continent. With respectively 57% and 52%, Morocco and South Africa are the leading countries for internet penetration rates, and are two of the main online scenes for African rap in 2017. Far ahead Togo (7.3%) or Guinea (1.8%), for example. Tunisia (48%) set new records with artists like Balti (more than 118 million views on YouTube in only two months with the track &#8220;Ya Lili&#8221;). Africa&#8217;s most populated country &#8211; Nigeria (46%) &#8211; is still leading the pop scene (Davido, Wizkid, Tekno, Olamide, Runtown, Tiwa Savage).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, in a field where the dice are loaded, some artists managed to pull it off nicely. Tales of <i>kifs<\/i>, diasporas, new record stats or strong characters: these artists all caught our attention in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover African hits timeline&#8217;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> playlist on <\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kvRVHim8YkA?list=PLi5Wq55_9apPEjR5CX6ODJ_UbrGuixMdQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/user\/panafricanmusic\/playlist\/3wKFGudR28CR8bdnMSnSXQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #eb5757;\"><strong>January, 2nd\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>&#8211;<b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>Surfing the gqom* wave (South Africa)<\/i><\/b><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kvRVHim8YkA?list=PLi5Wq55_9apPEjR5CX6ODJ_UbrGuixMdQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First appeared in the 2010s in Durban&#8217;s townships, this raw and minimalist music initially was an alternative to what was playing in South African big clubs and radios. It has even developed its own circuit of parties &#8211; in-house, dive bars or block parties &#8211; its own dance called &#8220;bengha&#8221; and its own icons &#8211; Naked Boyz and DJ Lag (head of reference lab<span style=\"color: #333333;\">el <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/gqomu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gqom Oh!<\/a>). Gqo<\/span>m is the voice of the underground. It has become the new <i>hype<\/i> soundtrack of the world today and South African had better ride its wave. Bhizer got it right, with the success of &#8220;Gobisiqolo&#8221;, among the most viewed South African video clips on YouTube in 2017 (+4.3M views).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Gqom comes from Zulu word UkuGqoma, meaning &#8220;hitting the drum&#8221;.<\/span><\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #eb5757;\">January, 8th\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span>&#8211; <b><i>Dancing th<span style=\"color: #333333;\">e &#8220;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WjueyT8D5Nk?list=PLi5Wq55_9apPEjR5CX6ODJ_UbrGuixMdQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><i>Kaba Ngondo<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/span><b><i><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8221; w<\/span>ith rapper Tenor (Cameroon)<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At only 19 years old, Tenor is the new ambassador of <i>kamer<\/i> rap (&#8220;Kaba Ngondo&#8221;, +1.3M views on YT). In 2017 he brought the house down with bikutsi singer Mani Bella on the track &#8220;D\u00e9rang\u00e9&#8221; and he rapped about <i>&#8220;the small lights that dress the darkness&#8221;<\/i> of love nights on &#8220;Bad Things&#8221;. He was the first rapper of the country to be signed to Abidjan-based Universal Music Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #eb5757;\">January 9th <\/span><\/b><\/span><em><b>&#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8220;<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MSFXxiSmlys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holy Ghost Fire<\/a>&#8220;, <i>Flex&#8217;s holy fire (Liberia)<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/em><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flex is one of richest-artist-on-the-continent Akon&#8217;s new signed act on his own label Konvict Kartel. It&#8217;s an update version of his legendary Konvict Muzik label he earned his fame from, thanks to such signatures as Lady Gaga, T-Pain, P-Square and Wizkid. In June 2016 he hit hard on &#8220;No Kissing&#8221; with Nigerian singer Patoranking (+31M views on YT).
