The album title is a nod to the street in Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Belgian rapper was born just about forty years ago. It is a resolutely hip hop album, in its production as well as in its poetic and political musings, and is coming out as one of spring\u2019s top releases.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As questioned in &#8220;La derni\u00e8re pluie-Inconnue \u00e0 cette adresse,&#8221; (The Last Rain &#8211; Unknown at This Address), is the fantastical music of Baloji &#8220;too black for the whites and too white for the blacks&#8221;? \u00a0Regardless, it is definitely hip hop; the mixing of genres makes this evident. From a slow boil to a furious bubbling of sound, Baloji arranges the album with impressive authority. The strings of James Underwood&#8217;s violin (Vampire Weekend, The XX) accompany the rumba (&#8220;Bipolaire-Les Noirs&#8221;), Trap brushes up against Bikutsi (&#8220;Ensemble (Wesh)&#8221;), and electronic music and Afrobeat alike are called upon to complete the talented artist\u2019s musical flow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baloji, who writes his own songs, is above all a poet. He is also a rapper, an amateur sampler, and a talented storyteller. Moreover, he designed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">137 Kaniama Avenue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as one long take. His 14 tracks, partly autobiographical \u2014 or to put it otherwise, his 14 cathartic tracks \u2014 are riddled with fake film dialogue as well as real cinematographic references, from Jean-Luc Godard to Michel Gondry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not surprising, since Baloji is also videographer. For the release of his first album, <\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2iPlh7TiNSn5fbWLIj8ZrK?si=hroJk29gQBSl9en3QQEE0Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotel Impala<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 10 years ago, he made all of his own music videos: &#8220;[I did it] rather out of necessity, at first, because there was no one to do them\u2026 and then I got caught up in the game. For me, aesthetics is a way to make the subject believable. He hopes to be able to show it in Congo:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is a satire of television propaganda in the Congo and more broadly soft power. In our societies, we continue to think that if it&#8217;s said on TV, it&#8217;s true\u2026 I&#8217;ve studied a lot of TV shows and the set I created for the film is a mix of Michel Drucker\u2019s, of Rai Uno\u2019s Sunday afternoon set and of Soul Train.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8220;Soleil de Volt&#8221; (Electric Sun) video is an extract from this 30-minute film. Eriq Ebouaney, who previously played Lumumba in Raoul Peck\u2019s film of the same name, \u00a0plays the TV presenter. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serge Aim\u00e9 Coulibaly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choreographed the video.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Soleil de Volt&#8221; reprises, in its <span style=\"color: #333333;\">own way, &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZW-Mht7TuR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dooyo<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">,&#8221; a song by the Dur Dur Band, a Somali group from the 80s. The masterful final title &#8220;Tanganyika,&#8221; is a testament to his critical positioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lGzvjR6X_Xk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Tanganyika&#8221; reveals the voice of counter-tenor Serge Katudji as well as a choir set up around bassist and choirmaster, Didier Likeng. A veritable requiem, this 11 minute track covers the dramatic situation in this southeastern province of the DRC. Accompanied by UN soldiers, Baloji and his orchestra performed in the city of Goma, a region which has suffered the most violence. Speaking about the performance, Baloji has said to have left his heart there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">&#8220;\u00c0 raison, les anciens disent malheur aux vainqueurs<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Rightly, the elders say bad luck to the winners<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">C\u2019est pourquoi les insurg\u00e9s pactisent avec l\u2019envahisseur<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">That&#8217;s why the insurgents make a deal with the invader<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Les rescap\u00e9s sont des ombres sans gloire<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">The survivors are shadows without glory<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Ils ont vendu leurs armes au diable, au maquis noir<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">They sold their weapons to the devil, to the black jungle<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Ils dealent avec la culpabilit\u00e9 des survivants<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">They deal with the guilt of the survivors<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Comme autant de t\u00e9moins encombrants&#8221;<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Just like the many unwieldy witnesses<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">(<\/span><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Tanganyika)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Tropisme &#8211; Start-up&#8221; is, according to Baloji, a true account of African affairs, with Afrobeat flavor. He credits Antibalas, a group from Brooklyn inspired by Fela Kuti, with influencing the track: &#8220;This is one of the tracks I prefer. It was inspired by the situation in southern Sudan and how we see these issues in other countries, in northern Cameroon for example, or in my region, Katanga, with its separatist aspiration. They even set the tone, from the get-go, with &#8220;Glossine (Zombie)&#8221;. On this title, the father of Afrobeat targets the military who blindly obey orders. This sequence starts with the song &#8220;Ciel d\u2019encre&#8221; (translation: Ink-Black Sky) \u00a0where I discuss the separation with the mother of my daughter and all that it implies, including the way of losing yourself in something carnal\u2026 I speak about that in the following track &#8220;Peau De Chagrin-Bleu de Nuit&#8221; (translation: The Magic Skin &#8211; Blue of the Night).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baloji was inspired by the title &#8220;I Belong to You,&#8221; by Lenny Kravitz, an artist who he came to appreciate for the latter\u2019s alternative, underground style. \u00a0The lyrics that speak to carnal love also evoke the climactic moment that is called, in French, &#8220;la petite mort&#8221; (Editor\u2019s note: the translation is &#8220;little death&#8221; and is a popular reference for sexual orgasm, as likened to death). &#8220;I had a lot of fun writing this text. No pun intended, but it was pretty pleasurable! This track speaks to a post-coital melancholy, to the feeling of vulnerability that we rarely talk about because it makes everyone feel uncomfortable.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TzHM_JLgqO0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baloji really bares it all on this new album. The climax comes with &#8220;La derni\u00e8re pluie-<span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inconnu \u00e0 cette adresse&#8221; (The Last Rain-Unknown at this Address) that echoes &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/6Wtj0btDlzWvtZIIAI8DfM?si=FB8DC7pHTNGs0DnHIwgRqg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entre les lignes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8221; (Between the Lines) from his debut album. It summarizes the trials and tribulations of a<\/span> life defined by separations and restless wanderings. It\u2019s a shocking piece, both for its painful lucidity and its furious combativeness:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">&#8220;Car si la vie est courte, elle ne sera pas petite<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Because if life is short, it will not be small<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Au bord de la faillite comme au pied de la r\u00e9ussite<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>On the verge of bankruptcy, also at the foot of success<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">L\u00e0 o\u00f9 ils entendent le tic-tac de l\u2019horloge,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Where they hear the ticking of the clock,<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">la cocotte-minute<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>the pressure cooker<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">Moi j\u2019entends le snare qui percute, qui bute,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>I hear the snare that hits, that stumbles,<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">et \u00e7a fait\u2026&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>and that makes&#8230;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">(La\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">derni\u00e8re pluie)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this same song, which Baloji brands as one of his most honest, he announces that it\u2019s his last album:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">&#8220;Pendant qu\u2019ils courent la gloire, je cours le risque<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>As they run the glory, I run the risk<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #f2994a;\">La suite d\u2019H\u00f4tel Impala sera mon dernier disque&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>The Impala Hotel Suite will be my last record<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to him, the economic model is not viable, particularly because of the importance he attaches to the image: &#8220;For me, it is a real extension of the music. But we live in a world where people do not understand that.
