PAM met him after his concert @ MaMA, in Paris.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is largely in hi<span style=\"color: #333333;\">s studio of Nairobi that leading figure of underground Kenyan and backbone of the collective <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCjozfkyuA4nrl71Z5rmC8Sw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just A Band<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recorded his first album: 12 groovy tracks between rap, funk, nu soul and electro which favour the vibrant Kenyan urban scene (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muthoni Drummer Queen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">..)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and more widely African (Petite Noir,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/sampa-the-great-sing-it-loud-and-free-yourself\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sampa the Great<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nneka). It\u2019s been amazing. The response has been really great. It\u2019s a learning experience for us as well because we were playing to an audience that is just discovering my material. It\u2019s just exciting.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">Your real name is Bill Sellanga. Why did you choose Blinky Bill for the scene?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because one day I saw my name while reading a newspaper. I thought that name was boring, Bill Sellanga, It sounds like an accountant\u00a0! In high school there was this cartoon called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blinky Bill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and everyone used to call me that\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">In the Australian cartoon, &#8220;Blinky Bill&#8221;, is a small courageous and eco-friendly koala. My mum used to play guitar and my dad used to sing in a choir for national events. He did play music all the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\"><br \/>\nWhat kind of music your parents were listening to?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>My dad used to listen congolese music like Franco, Awilo Longomba\u2026 a lot of those artists. My mum used to listen to gospel music. So I was surrounded by those kind influences a lot at home. But also we\u2019d sneak in TV shows that had Michael Jackson&#8230; So we were very exposed to pop music. As a result, some of my music is very heavily rooted in African music but with a global outlook. I listen to hip-hop mostly, african and american hip-hop. And I love jazz too, old school jazz singers as well. So my musical influences are very wide.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\"><br \/>\n&#8220;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5wBTdfAkqGU\"><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">California love<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><\/b><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\"> (2pac feat Dr. Dre) was a revelation for you. Why?<\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the Talkbox! I love the Talkbox. I play with it on my new album. I just never heard it in African music. When I was talking about congolese musicians\u2026 They had Franco, then they had Werrason and then Fally Ipupa\u00a0: those different generations build up on what older musicians left. But with kenyan music, there\u2019s not someone you can be like\u00a0: \u00aboh that\u2019s our Hugh Masekela\u00a0\u00bb in that sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\"><br \/>\nWe don\u2019t really know the Kenyan music scene here, how would you describe it?<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">They are so much new fresh kenyan music right now. They are so many different artists who are coming up. Some of them act on my new album. My album was mostly made in Nairobi. I also featured a lot of kenyan musicians in the scene who i really admire. I hope that people will want to discover more because there is so much talent waiting for a chance to show to the world what we do it.<br \/>\n<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Blinky Bill - Showdown (Official Video) ft. Who is she?<br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Sage is a really good friend of mine. She is one on my favorite singers in Kenya right now. She is very talented and we like working together. She was always in the studio when I recorded the album.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">What do you build your music on?<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>I spend most of my money on buying musical gears and equipment. It\u2019s the first trip i didn\u2019t buy any things.. maybe because I finished my album and I\u2019m just feeling lazy. So I ended up buying shoes\u2026 (laugh)<\/p>\n<p>Well, I just want to give myself a little bit more time. But normally I buy a lot of musical equipment, I listen to records, I love to sample, I love to hear how other producers make their stuff. I\u2019m always studying different producers from around the world because there\u2019s always something to learn from other people\u2019s methods.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\">Each track of your album is an invitation to dance. Is it what you are about : sending good vibes out there?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">From my understanding of where the world is right now, we are living in a very strange time. We have crazy presidents who say whatever it is they want to say, and I know there\u2019s been presidents like those in the past, but i feel like as an artist in his generation and in his time. It\u2019s important to spread some good cheer because people are going through a lot of things. What does Mungu Halili means?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>\u201cGod doesn\u2019t sleep\u201d. It\u2019s a phrase that is used a lot in Kenya. It means roughly : even if I\u2019m having a lot of trouble in my life, things will get better.<\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #bb6bd9;\"><b><br \/>\nSampa the great is based in Australia, Petite Noir in South Africa, Nneka in Nigeria. How did the collaborations with these artists happened?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Petite Noir came to Nairobi last year in February to perform at a venue. He came to my studio, wanted to hang out. I played him a bunch of tracks and when I played \u201cOh Wah\u201d he just went crazy for it.<\/p>\n<p>I met Sampa The Great for the first time last week in London. I reached out to her on twitter and sent her the song. That\u2019s how she\u2019s featured on the project.<br \/>\nNneka as well\u2026 I went to Lagos, I met her, we went to studio together. I\u2019m just a big fan of her, her voice and her stuff. But it\u2019s not out yet.
