Baloji<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is back with a self-directed short movie featuring songs from his album. He also announces a re-released of 137 Avenue Kaniama\u00a0<\/em>as a one-track mixtape, titled\u00a0Kaniama: The Yellow Version,\u00a0<\/em>on May 3.<\/h4>\n

Baloji’s\u00a0137 Avenue Kaniama<\/em>\u00a0was one of our favourite albums of the year<\/a><\/span>. Used to directing his own music videos,\u00a0the songwriter and video director\u00a0just released Zombies<\/em>, a short movie featuring the tracks “Spotlight,\u201d \u201cGlossine (Zombie)\u201d\u00a0and \u201cCiel d’encre\u201d from his recent album.<\/p>\n

Zombies\u00a0<\/em>makes us dive into a futuristic Kinshasa, from a hair-dressing salon to a dancefloor where the cellphones’ dazzling blue lights compete with the club’s neons. Directed by Baloji himself, the short is a journey through a\u00a0world between distrust and hope where the rapper’s take on digital culture is the common theme.<\/p>\n

On “Glossine (Zombie)”, Baloji points to the resignation of his contemporaries:<\/p>\n

“You’re dead on your feet, you’re dead on your feet
\nEverything seems blurry, everything seems blurry
\nIt the sleeping disease
\nBrothers are on standby
\nThey’re wondering how to see further
\nThan the tip of their joint…”<\/p>\n

With Baloji, the image is at the service of the song and aesthetics a way to make the subject believable. To make matters worse he continues to take a critical look at the country\u2019s affairs and even, more widely, at the current state of the African continent.<\/p>\n
