Surrounded\u00a0by\u00a0both the Amazonian forest and Atlantic Ocean, the\u00a0 city of Bel\u00e9m, in the Northern state of Par\u00e1 in Brazil, was the epicentre of a myriad of cultures, which combination gave birth to several new music genres.<\/h4>\n

It took\u00a0Analog Africa<\/a><\/span>\u00a0six years to elaborate their\u00a028th compilation,\u00a0Jamb\u00fa e os m\u00edticos sons da amaz\u00f4nia. <\/em>It tries to tell the story of Bel\u00e9m, the\u00a0birthplace of a myriad of new musical genres,\u00a0such as\u00a0carimb\u00f3, samba-de-cacete\u00a0and siri\u00e1. Being at the intersection of Amerindian cultures, Caribbean sounds and rhythms as well as from\u00a0Colombia, Surinam and Guyana, the city of Bel\u00e9m was also known as the “Caribbean Port”.<\/p>\n

African rhythms and regions such as Umbanda, Candombl\u00e9 and the Tambor de Mina, brought to the city through slavery, had a major impact on the new music styles created in Bel\u00e9m, giving birth to genres such as\u00a0undun, bangu\u00ea\u00a0and carimb\u00f3\u00a0later popularized by heavyweights such as\u00a0Orlando Pereira, Mestre Cupij\u00f3 and Pinduca.<\/p>\n

In order to understand the story of Bel\u00e9m’s melting-pot, it’s necessary to understand the influence of the soundsystem culture and the impact it had on the broadcasting of these new music styles.\u00a0Beginning as simple gramophones connected to loudspeakers tied to light posts or trees, these sound systems livened up neighbourhood parties and family gatherings, progressively upgrading to become major attractions, packing nightclubs.<\/p>\n

This cultural tumult gave birth to several radios and record labels, such as\u00a0Rauland Bel\u00e9m Som Ltd founded in 1970, helping to broadcast these new music styles and popularize the artists, allowing them to leave a permanent stamp in Brazilian popular music.<\/p>\n

Just as the Amazonian that gives its name,\u00a0Jamb\u00fa <\/em>is an euphoric travel into Brazilian culture, with a long-lasting aftertaste. And\u00a0blends very well with cacha\u00e7a !<\/p>\n
