{"id":41764,"date":"2019-05-09T12:53:49","date_gmt":"2019-05-09T10:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/guts-inner-journey-of-a-modest-and-funky-beat-digger\/"},"modified":"2022-05-19T17:54:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T15:54:21","slug":"guts-inner-journey-of-a-modest-and-funky-beat-digger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/guts-inner-journey-of-a-modest-and-funky-beat-digger\/","title":{"rendered":"Guts, inner journey of a modest and funky beat-digger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe  class=\"pam-featured-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dloeAeOhhl0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">The beat-digging veteran whose crossfader has always oscillated between soul, funk, jazz, reggae and hip-hop offers his best scratch so far with the LP <em>Philanthropiques<\/em>: 14 homemade productions inspired by 29 years of wild digging, dusting and cutting.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Upon the premiere of the video clip for \u201cKenke Corner\u201d, shot in Lisbon by Portuguese visual artist\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/catarinalimao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catarina Lim\u00e3o<\/a> \u2013 already the author of the videos for Konono n\u00ba1 meets Batida, because Guts loves multiculturalism \u2013 PAM wanted to know more about the tropical philanthropism of the French digger traveler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guts has felt many grooves in an almost-30-year career. From his key role as a producer for French hip-hop hitmakers Alliance Ethnik in the \u201890s &#8211; <i>Respect!<\/i> \u2013 to his 100% <i>\u201cPura Vida\u201d<\/i> compilations mischievously playfully <i>Beach Diggin\u2019<\/i>, besides many collaborations in the most funky circles of hip-hop (De La Soul, Common, Raggasonic, Svinkels, Les Sages Po\u00e8tes De La Rue, and even The Roots\u2019 Rahzel), and six albums under his own name including this latest delivery that has just hit the racks. <i>Philantropiques<\/i>, a pun that contains Guts\u2019 malice, humility and utopia, is a well kept promise: the producer is a true philanthropist when it comes to the tropical regions\u2019 cultures, particularly the Caribbean and Africa.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fabrice Henri aka Guts is one of those precious light-hearted enlightened spirits. Always on the move, in search of any beat that will make his soul groove, the smiling face admitted in an interview with our colleagues from <em>Brain<\/em> magazine in 2014: <i>\u201cI want to make music that my children can listen to, or that makes you want to make love, to invite your friends to have a drink, to cook a good dish. In short, music to make people want to do simple things, real stuff.\u201d <\/i>Simple and funky, in short, to quote the lyrics of one of his earliest hit with Parisian major \u201990s hip-hop band, the multicultural Alliance Ethnik.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now let\u2019s talk simple and true: PAM directly asked Guts about the intimate stories that lie behind each of the 14 tracks, and the memories the producer has patiently buried into them. As a true philanthropist, after all<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><strong>&#8220;Voyaging Bird&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration: <em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Gayap-Rhythm-Drummers-The-Challenge\/release\/3314639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Challenge<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Gayap Rhythm Drummers<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I digged this record only a few weeks before starting the production of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philanthropiques<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> album. This project was financed in 1982 by the Canada Council For The Arts\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explorations Program<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This record is a great inspiration for tropical rhythms and it was the starting point of the track \u201cVoyaging Bird\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qj2W0-TfEEk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><strong>&#8220;Mucagiami&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration :\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Vum-Vum-Salal%C3%A9\/release\/3516906\">Salal\u00e9<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Vum Vum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonga is certainly the most emblematic Angolan-born artist, yet in the Semba style, Angola&#8217;s musical heritage is so huge that along my digging sessions, I came across this deeply emotional album from a relatively unknown artist named Vum Vum. The 1976 track titled &#8220;Mucagiami&#8221;, with its basic guitar-vocals arrangement was an obvious choice for a cover, and a way to share the existence of this music with the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IrDegjN15Dc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">&#8220;J\u00e1 N\u00e3o H\u00e1 Mais Paz&#8221;<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Os-Originais-Do-Samba-O-Samba-A-CordaOs-Originais-A-Ca%C3%A7amba\/master\/1128479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O Samba \u00c9 A Corda&#8230;Os Originais A Ca\u00e7amba<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Os Originais Do Samba<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artistic orientation is completely samba soul and this album of Os Originais Do Samba perfectly illustrates the mutation the Brazilian made to Experience Unlimited\u2019s original track &#8220;Peace Gone Away&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qk3DcBKPmFI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">&#8220;Daddy Sweet&#8221;<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration: <em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Jo-Tongo-Jo-Tongo\/master\/278321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jo Tongo<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Jo Tongo<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea with &#8220;Daddy Sweet&#8221; was to pay tribute to the explosive afro soul funk of Cameroonian musician Jo Tongo. His first album is an absolute reference in this genre and has greatly inspired us for our collaboration with Pat Kalla.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KNra299YEKE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">&#8220;Matadou&#8221;<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Matadi-Dance-My-Love\/release\/2586354\">Dance My Love<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Matadi<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matadi is a great band of Paris-based African mercenaries who gathered for a unique and great afro-disco-funk album that inspired me with Toure Haladji\u2019s amazing bass lines. The lead part of \u201cMatadou&#8221; is precisely the bass around the which the whole track was composed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EcbaO_Wlhtw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;Nosso Carimb\u00f3 \u00e9 do Mundo&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspirations:\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Pinduca-Carimb%C3%B3-E-Sirimb%C3%B3-No-Embalo-Do-Pinduca-Vol-4\/release\/4011693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carimb\u00f3 E Sirimb\u00f3 No Embalo Do Pinduca &#8211; Vol. 4<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Pinduca and\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Nazar%C3%A9-Pereira-Ver-O-Peso-Na-Terra-Dos-Carimb%C3%B3s\/release\/5865682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ver-O-Peso, Na Terra Dos Carimb\u00f3s<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Nazar\u00e9 Pereira<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This track was inspired by my favorite song from &#8220;carimb\u00f3&#8221;, a music genre from Brazil\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nordeste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> region. I first heard the song &#8220;Mistura De Carimb\u00f3 Com Ciranda&#8221; during a Tropical Discoteq party and I immediately bought the album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vol.4<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the undisputed carimb\u00f3 master Pinduca. Of his whole discography, the fourth volume is by far my favorite. Still in the carimb\u00f3 genre, I discovered Nazar\u00e9 Pereira\u2019s album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ver-O-Pe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Na Terra Dos Carimb\u00f3s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and I had the idea of associating them on the same track.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OM3PvXZDEPU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">&#8220;Groove Ma Poule\u201d<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/DjeuhDjoah-Lieutenant-Nicholson-Tes-Qui\/master\/1025691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Remets T\u2019es Qui ?<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0DjeuhDjoah &amp; Lieutenant Nicholson<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The track &#8220;Cupid&#8221; from Djeuhdjoah &amp; Nicholson&#8217;s debut album is a regular selection in my DJ sets. This song inspired me so much that I had to invite the duo on my new album.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kc-NGdkFUBU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\">&#8220;Sa C\u00e9 Kado\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Calypso-Rose-Ah-Cant-Wait\/release\/1580022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ah Cant Wait<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Calypso Rose<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I had already digged Trinidad music heritage especially with my compilations <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beach Diggin\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I wanted to make a nod to soca and calypso. The first record that entered my collection is Calypso Rose diva\u2019s album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ah Cant Wait<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QXTrHXDQOao\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;Li Dous Konsa&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration: <em><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Ibo-Combo-Caf%C3%A9\/master\/1305262\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caf\u00e9<\/a><\/em>, Ibo Combo<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haitian music is incredibly rich and some records have become virtually impossible to find, like this amazing album by Ibo Combo. This is one of the hardest records I&#8217;ve been digging, and it eventually inspired me for this track<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XvI7Zl77AlM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;Kenke Corner&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration: <em style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Pat-Thomas-3-And-Marijata-Pat-Thomas-And-Marijata\/master\/868248\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Thomas and\u00a0Marijata<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0Pat Thomas\u00a0and Marijata<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea with &#8220;Kenke Corner&#8221; was to compose an hymn to Ghana&#8217;s highlife. This 1977 Pat Thomas album was recorded at legendary studio EMI Lagos and I always go back to it when it comes to highlife music.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f1pJI_YRPfE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;Shake It and Rise Up&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Eko-Funky-Disco-Music\/master\/1314105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Funky Disco Music<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Eko<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This afro disco track makes me think of the records of the famous Cameroonian composer and singer Eko Roosevelt Louis, and especially the LP <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funky Disco Music<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6IuJuoucvv0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;Boug\u00e9 Bagay La&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/General-Ehi-Duncan-And-The-Africa-Army-Express-Jah-Soldier\/release\/7908270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jah Soldier<\/a>, General Ehi Duncan And The Africa Army Express\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoug\u00e9 Bagay La\u201d is a Nigeria-music inspired improvisation we\u2019ve done in the studio. The song I\u2019m referring to here \u2013\u00a0that I always play in my DJ sets\u00a0\u2013 is featured on the rarest and most awaited album of my wantlist: an\u00a0incredible track titled \u201cAfrica\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xvr1rX_tbRc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #fd7065;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8220;S\u00e9nou Menm&#8221;<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Inspiration:\u00a0<em style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Les-Vikings-De-La-Guadeloupe-Hypocrisie\/release\/3150775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hypocrisie<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Les Vikings de la Guadeloupe<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This track is clearly inspired by the music of the West Indies and one of the archipelago\u2019s essential bands: Les Vikings de la Guadeloupe.
