Following\u00a0Two Niles To Sing A Melody: The Violins and Synths of Sudan<\/em>, <\/em>the Grammy-nominated record label is releasing\u00a0a new compilation featuring the music of Luxembourg-based Cape Verdean band Pilon.<\/h4>\n

Since 2016 and his first release, Ostinato’s founder Vik Sohonie<\/a><\/span> has relentlessly been digging up forgotten music of Haiti, Somalia, Sudan and – as in the upcoming compilation – Cape Verde.<\/p>\n

Grupo Pilon: Leite Quente Funana\u0301 de Cabo Verde<\/em>\u00a0follows Ostinato\u2019s\u00a0Synthesize the Sou<\/em>l, a compilation of electronic music during 1973 \u2013\u00a01988.\u00a0 A period where the archipelago musicians incorporated\u00a0electronic instruments into the local production, in a blend that gave birth to Cape Verde\u2019s own version of electronic music, echoing the euphoria of a newly-gained freedom.<\/p>\n

Grupo Pilon represents the second <\/span>generation of\u00a0 musicians who contributed to one of the most lush periods of cultural innovation by immigrants in Europe. In Luxembourg, in 1986, a group of teenagers formed the largely unknown (outside of Cape Verdean circles) but consistently brilliant band named after the blunt instrument used in the islands to pound corn for Cabo Verde\u2019s national dish, cachupa. <\/span><\/p>\n

With only five members, Pilon combined searing <\/span>estilo Krioulu <\/span><\/i>drumming and the hybrid cola-zouk style <\/span>with blissful synth work and rugged guitar licks, creating a stripped-down, addictive sound that masterfully straddled two worlds, a seductive electro-Funan\u00e1 carnival born from the first few sips of hot milk. <\/span><\/p>\n
