A rundown of the most notable South African hip hop releases from 2019.<\/span><\/h4>\n

South African hip hop went through a dip in 2018, creatively speaking. While there were a fair amount of releases \u2014 Nasty C’s\u00a0<\/span>Strings and Bling<\/span><\/i>, Sjava’s\u00a0<\/span>Umqhele<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 few managed to make as impactful a presence as pivotal cuts from preceding years — like that period in-between 2014 and 2017 when scene-stealing releases from K.O. (<\/span>Skhanda Republic<\/span><\/span><\/i>), Kwesta (<\/span>DaKAR II<\/span><\/i>), Shane Eagle (<\/span>Yellow<\/span><\/i>), Rouge (The\u00a0<\/span>New Era Sessions<\/span><\/i>) re-wrote the rule book of rap.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This year opened up beautifully, the tone set by an overlooked\u00a0<\/span>year-end EP<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Shane Eagle. Yugen Blakrok\u2019s dungeon raps on\u00a0<\/span>Anima Mysterium<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0painted a futurist landscape which Sipho the Gift’s\u00a0<\/span>iNDiGO<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0completed with muted tones.\u00a0

Further into the year, Gigi Lamayne’s back-to-the-roots burner,\u00a0<\/span>Job Woods<\/span><\/i><\/a>, served to remind the streets and the mainstream who has the grip when it comes to the kasi rap game. YoungstaCPT carried an entire city on his back with his epic\u00a0<\/span>3T<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0release, which earned him four nominations and two wins —\u00a0<\/span>Album of the Year<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Best Video\u00a0<\/span><\/i>— at this year’s South African Hip Hop Awards.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And when we all thought the onslaught was over, the rap gawds Khuli Chana and Stogie T chimed in with stellar performances on\u00a0<\/span>Planet Of The Have Nots<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>The Empire of Sheep<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All in all, the scene is in great health.<\/span><\/p>\n
