Sweeping through Asia and into Europe, Lagos saw the&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first reported case<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;of the now-declared pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. An Italian citizen entering the country showed symptoms and was subsequently isolated and treated. Since then, efforts have been on an increase throughout the country. Awareness on care and how to detect symptoms has been created through the varying forms of media as the Health ministry of the country continues to relay daily updates to Nigerians.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However doggedly Nigeria have tackled the COVID-19 pandemic, its toll on economic activity is yet felt. Globally, as the world plans to contain the virus, it has made for a lot of changes.&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/09\/812898220\/laundry-between-emails-working-from-home-goes-viral-in-the-time-of-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are being asked to work from home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulse.ng\/bi\/strategy\/microsoft-and-chevron-are-among-13-of-the-largest-global-companies-who-have-asked\/4n60tgc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporations and offices are being closed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/talksport.com\/football\/680697\/coronavirus-sport-live-updates-uefa-confirm-euro-2020-2021-boxing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the biggest football leagues have suspended a considerable amount of games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5800452\/oil-price-questions-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oil prices have gone down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in the entertainment sector, music events and tours are being postponed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #7d5f97;\"><b><br \/>\nTour dates and shows postponed&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta-born Nigerian superstar Davido had been touring North America before the virus broke out. He\u2019d sold out Edmonton, Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.&nbsp; However, the global space as it is right now had the&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Good Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;artiste announce that the rest of his tour was postponed. On social media, Davido expressed sadness over what had been a successful tour, and had seen international superstar Chris Brown share the stage with the Nigerian artiste in Edmonton.&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m saddened to halt what has been a fantastic sold-out tour so far, but postponing is the right thing to do,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;the artiste wrote, asserting that&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe health and safety of my fans and staff is most paramount and nothing else matters. Be safe and see y\u2019all soon! God be with us all!\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/davido\/\">Davido<\/a> hasn\u2019t been the only artiste to make such an announcement recently.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/burna-boy\/\">Burna Boy<\/a>, who was to perform in Namibia\u2019s capital city of Windhoek on the 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&nbsp;of April, too, has p<\/span>ostponed. The artiste was set to thrill the Namibian audience as part of his&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">African Giant Tour<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organized by Mindscape Events. However, on March 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Namibian government&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/iharare.com\/burna-boy-concert-cancelled-namibia-suspends-public-gatherings-over-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;all public gatherings, including the nation\u2019s Independence celebrations which would have held on March 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Asa, the legendary Nigerian-French artiste, also on March 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, announced the postponement of her forthcoming European tour dates. Her duo of local shows \u2013 in Lagos and Abuja, on April 11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;and April 13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;respectively \u2013 will, however, go on as planned.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">It is expected that more Nigerian artistes with plans will consider their international gigs in the coming days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #7d5f97;\"><b><br \/>\nMusic festivals postponed, too&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global music events find themselves impacted too: the&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/african-artists-performing-at-coachella-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coachella<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arguably the biggest music festival in the world, also had its dates pushed. Seun Kuti, the iconic Afrobeat artiste, was the only Nigerian on the lineup of the festival; other artistes on its 2020 roster includes American recluse superstar Frank Ocean, British-Nigerian rapper Dave, the prom<span style=\"color: #333333;\">inent South African DJ Black Coffee, amongst a host of others, from FKA Twigs to <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/koffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koffee<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">The Afro Nation festival which was to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico from March 18 \u2013 March 21 has also been postponed. Many Nigerian artistes were on the lineup of the event co-founded by Nigerian creative entrepreneur Obi Asika. 2Baba, Burna Boy, Davido, Patoranking and Teni were among artistes to headline the show, a pan-African attempt at uniting black artists all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #7d5f97;\"><b>General reaction of Nigerians&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigerians have reacted rather optimistically to the COVID-19, somewhat confident in how its health officials (and the general public)&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/africasacountry.com\/2017\/12\/how-nigeria-defeated-ebola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defeated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;the much deadlier Ebola virus. That isn\u2019t to say Nigerians are being complacent: sanitizers spiked in demand and prices in the early days; as usual, hands are being washed and face masks are a regular sight around the country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">But given the laudable efforts of health officials so far, there\u2019s every reason to be positive \u2013 even in the continued conflict of interest that has pit citizens against a government which doesn\u2019t seem eager to stop entry into the country \u2013 that Nigeria could shine as a beacon of hope to the rest of the world in these times.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As provided by Nigeria\u2019s Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire:<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNigerians are advised to follow these tips, and if you feel unwell and have been outside the country in the last 14 days or if you suspect a case, report to @FMoHNigeria, 0909 299 6283, 0809 555 3232, @NCDCgov, 0708 711 0839WhatsApp, 0809 955 5577 SMS, toll-free: 0800 970 0000-0010.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The background story&nbsp; Nigeria, the most populous black nation in the world,&nbsp;confirmed&nbsp;its first case of the Coronavirus (otherwise known as the COVID-19) on February 27th.
