{"id":109468,"date":"2022-06-30T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/?p=109468"},"modified":"2022-06-29T17:16:49","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:16:49","slug":"anpagay-somin-tegor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/anpagay-somin-tegor\/","title":{"rendered":"Maloya meets currulao on Somin Tegor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bongo Joe Records hosts Afro-colombian outfit Pixvae and creole group Ti\u2019Kaniki to team up as An\u2019Pagay to produce their first album, <em>Somin Tegor.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusing festive Afro-Colombian currulao with the warm Creole tunes of maloya allowed the newly formed An\u2019Pagay to produce their debut album <em>Somin Tegor. <\/em>An\u2019Pagay is made up of two unique bands, Ti\u2019Kaniki led by Luc Moindranz\u00e9 Karioudja, a reunion of French musicians from the mainland and overseas, namely the Mascarene islands. The other, Pixvae, led by Romain Dugelay, a French band as well, used to experiment with the marimba de chonta, an instrument popular in traditional Afro-Colombian music. The latter was itself&nbsp; born from the reunion between Afro-Colombian group Nilamay\u00e9 and French rock trio Kouma to produce their distinctive Colombian crunch, proving Pixvae\u2019s members&#8217; taste for fusion is nothing new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"SOMIN TEGOR _  AN&#039;PAGAY\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wNtxxGnPDRw?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The name given to their album is a reference to a street located in St Benoit, a town in R\u00e9union where Luc Moindranz\u00e9 Karioudja grew up. It\u2019s a project deeply rooted in the musical tradition of the island, notably maloya, and the ternary blues inherited from slaves who worked on sugarcane fields on the R\u00e9union Islands in the 17th century. Not unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/jako-maron-en\/?_per_page=17\">Jako Maron<\/a>, An\u2019Pagay offers a revisited version of the genre mixed with post-rock influences.
