{"id":109262,"date":"2022-06-27T10:49:21","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T08:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/?p=109262"},"modified":"2022-06-27T12:38:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T10:38:34","slug":"linda-ayupuka-god-created-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/linda-ayupuka-god-created-everything\/","title":{"rendered":"In the laboratory of electro Fra Fra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>\u201cWe were not thinking it would move this way!\u201d <\/em>says Francis Ayamga when we speak via a crystal clear whatsapp call booked to discuss <em>God Created Everything &#8211; <\/em>the debut album he produced for Fra Fra Gospel artist Linda Ayupuka from his Top Link Studio in the hills of Bongo Sou (about as far north as you can go in Ghana). Slated for release on the 24th June via <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maisumdiscos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mais Um<\/a> the boutique label out to fuse styles, disregard genres and irritate purists &#8211;<em> God Created Everything <\/em>is a mashup of gospel, disco and savannah sounds, produced with all the D.I.Y vim of Balani Show, <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/nyege-nyege\/\">Nyege Nyege Tapes<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music.com\/en\/tag\/awesome-tapes-from-africa\/\">Awesome Tapes<\/a> roster. The result of a serendipitous meeting on a festival shuttle bus between Mais Um\u2019s label boss Lewis Robinson and Ayamga (who was performing as a percussionist with King Ayisoba at the time) the eight track album puts the bright soprano voice of Linda Ayupuka front and centre, and <em>in the pocket<\/em> of polyrhythmic drum loops and sampled flutes to create four to the floor <em>electro fra fra<\/em> that smuggles gospel themes into the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We begin our call with a geography lesson from Francis on why he chose Bongo &#8211; 15 hours north of Accra and just over 10 kilometres south of Burkina Faso to open his studio. <em>\u201cBongo is my hometown, and we never had a studio here before. We have so many talented people here but it\u2019s a long way to go to Accra! So there&#8217;s a lot of people who are good but have no access to a studio. So I wanted to help my people.\u201d <\/em>Financing the build with money he made from a mobile phone repair shop in the regional capital Bolgatanga,<strong> <\/strong>Francis kitted out Top Link with speakers, microphones and hard drives and was busy recording the many troubadour <em>kologo<\/em> players of his locale when Linda paid him a visit&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pan-african-music-production.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/4_Francis-Ayamga-%C2%A9-Clement-Eastwood-1-1010x674.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-109266\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking up the story she explains the osmosis of her musical education which came via her mother, also a musician<em>: \u201cwho would always carry me to where she was performing,\u201d <\/em>&nbsp;meaning Linda had long been in demand as a live gospel artist when she approached Francis to record her debut.<em> <\/em>\u201cA<em>fter the second track, I realised Linda was different! Different to other gospel artists who are all doing it in the same way and sound similar\u201d <\/em>says Francis, before continuing,<em> \u201cWhen I started recording her I thought we were just doing it to introduce Linda as a gospel audience. But then as we went on I began to see how her style is so different, her tempo, her rhythm\u2026\u201d&nbsp; <\/em>Francis and Linda thus realised they could bring something different to the party: <em>\u201cThere is other gospel music\u201d <\/em>he explains:<em> \u201cBut you can\u2019t play it at parties or in the club like Linda\u2019s! &#8211; It\u2019s just for funerals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Linda Ayupuka - Yine Faamam (Official Video) [From album, God Created Everything, June 24, 2022]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ol7GTSltsgM?feature=oembed&#038;autoplay=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Listening to <em>God Created Everything<\/em> this is evident. From the pitched up call and response of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ol7GTSltsgM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yine Faamam <\/a>with its bush taxi ready autotune stylings, to \u201cAnnebooy\u201d with it\u2019s kwaito bop perfect for the club, the electro gospel on <em>God Created Everything, <\/em>which is sung predominantly in Guren\u025b language, lands hard in a variety of settings.<em> <\/em>Shy but cool on the call Linda says of the album <em>\u201cIt is my talent, and I\u2019m doing it for people to know god is great.\u201c <\/em>Whilst Francis rejoins:<em> \u201cLinda is like a sister to me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation then turns to borders as we discuss shows planned prior to the pandemic in neighbouring Burkina Faso and elsewhere.
