LAKUTA : "Brothers & Sisters", soul‑jazz summertime ! [Tru Thoughts Records]

With members hailing from Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia, Spain and the UK, the Brighton-based band LAKUTA, releases today “Brothers & Sisters ” on the well known  Tru Throughts Records !

10 summertime songs, from jazz, soul, afrobeat and latin music, produced by renowned producer Nick Faber, and a number of remixes already on the way from the likes of Jaguar Skills (BBC Radio 1Extra), Steve Cobby (Fila Brasilia) and Wrongtom (Tru Thoughts).

Tanzanian/ Kenyan vocalist Siggi Mwasote has generated her own unique lyrical style, giving a fresh funk-soul twist to the traditional African aesthetic. Many of the lyrics are written in a mixture of Swahili and English and the unique female-led perspective is communicated passionately through the music.

The word LAKUTA is derived from Siggi’s mother tongue of Swahili and can be translated as a number of things: as a noun, it translates as ‘the walls,’ as a verb, it translates as ‘to find, meet, share or feel full’.
